@bulletinyurass totally agree, there are too many dimensions, styles and types of music that warrant individuality. Hank Marvin was superb in the Shadows but somehow the style of Stevie Ray Vaughan would not work. Replace the edge in U2 with Dave Gilmour and it ain't worth thinking about. Everyone is making music to fit the part, enough said :)

what a load of utter bollocks. I hate it when pretentious musicians talk total shite. Now I am not particularly a fan of Gun n Roses or Slash but what he is saying is total garbage. I have just listened to a live version of that song called Estranged, concentration??? What the fuck is he talking about, the guitar work in it is hardly noticeable and what solo? Come on Slash stop talking shit, Sweet Child of Mine had far far harder soloing

@TalkToTheBody Sweet Child o' Mine was improvised, it doesn't even need concentration cause the backin' track is simple, so you can improvise easily. Estranged is way more complexed.

@LesPaulFelix Not sure if you are a guitarist or not. I have been playing since I was 18, I am now 47. Yes I should be better than I am but that is not the issue. Fact is despite listening to Estranged there is absolutely no guitar part there that is hard for a man of his calibre the only tricky part is violining the volume pot for the swell effect, something that was mastered by Alex Lifeson. The violining was in Slash's example very easy and can only be classed as intermediate playing

@LesPaulFelix no lead solo on a recording is improvised. solos are usually broken down into pieces and strung together. Ask any half decent guitarist and they will tell you they have the original piece in their head and when they go live the deviate and improvise as they see fit and when they find themselves going too wide they gel back to the original concept

what is with all this bull shit on who is the best guitarist? IN MY OPINION shawn lane is the greatest guitarist ever. amazing feeling and melody, lots of soul, technically unsurpassed (although like i said technicality doesn't matter much), amazing tone and the guy had arthritis and was still able to play amazing guitar. he was a walking encyclopedia of the guitar. like i said it is an OPINION, these are just my thoughts. R.I.P. shawn lane.

Slash is pure geniality! He is classic, he created some of the most notorious guitar solos EVER.
On the other hand Matt Bellamy (Muse) is pure awesomeness too, but he plays the modern way and stuff...
But Slash really created BIG part of the rock music! Thanks to him for that! :) /,,/

@mykzie @Death2RockwayMiddle There sure is a "best" guitarist, but only if we're talking "technique" here. There's a fastest guitarist, for example, the guy actually is in the Guiness book for that. Also there's a cleanest guitarist, there's a guitarist who knows the biggest amounts of songs, and then, there should exist the best overall player.
But again. It's only technique. Otherwise, it's up to anyone to decide who's the best.
But technically talking, Slash is FAR from a guitar god

@Death2RockwayMiddle Also, my picks for "best player", among the most well known ones, would be like... Jeff Loomis, Michael Angelo Batio, Rusty Cooley, or some douchebags such as those.
Although, I don't find their music to be very nice to me, besides a few songs. But their technique is something near perfection.

@uofm97 I can't disagree with that, and nobody can actually say anything against that, it would be like saying "red is SOOOO fucking better than blue!"
I only wanted to put out the only real aspect people should argue over when it comes to musicians. Tastes are just no discussion matter.
And yeah. Slash sure is a soulful artist, although I'm not too much into his stuff. I'm into classical music and death/black metal, mostly. He doesnt make me vibe that much, really.
